5Don’t let the low price fool you. This is a great machine!
By Plein Jane
This machine represents the most incredible value-for-money on the market today. It is very, very easy to use, and the manual is exceptionally helpful. It comes with every foot and accessory you could ever possibly need. In fact, there is nothing more you can buy for it. Compare that to the other sewing machine manufacturers, which give you only the most basic feet and then you must purchase everything else separately. If you have been hankering for the convenience of fully computerized sewing, automatic needle threading, push-button sewing, and lots of fun stitches, don’t hesitate. I highly recommend this machine. I’ve owned very expensive machines from all the top manufacturers, and would not recommend it if the stitches were not beautiful or if it were loud or junky. This was given to me as a gift (I’m ashamed to say I would probably have walked right past it because of its low price) and I love it so much, I have gone on to buy the Brother serger here on Amazon, and also a $999.00 Brother Innovis, which is another tremendous bargain. I was really pleased to see that even the more expensive machine uses the same bobbins and feet as this one, and this has many of the same features. This $200 machine comes iwth virtually all the same attachments as the $1000 one.

This is the machine that some of the larger sewing and quilting expos are using in their workshops now because they are so lightweight, easy to learn, and reliable. High end Berninas and Vikings are just too complicated for people to sit down and learn at in a classroom setting, and they are way too expensive. This machine is the Featherweight of the 21st century, with tons of stitches and fun built in. Go for it!!!

4Pros and Cons – You Decide
By T. Zielke
I bought the machine for the price and the features, but I have to admit, I was nervous after reading some of the reviews that told about all the problems that they had right away. But I figured it had to be better than my 35-40 year old Kenmore. I want to state right away, I am very happy with my purchase thus far. I’ve had some problems (read below), but I have managed to figure some things out. But, if you are looking for a good machine to quilt, this machine has all the features you will need, and it’s priced so you can actually afford it. 2 other points to know, Amazon has a good return policy and from what I have heard, Brother has a good customer service history. These were 2 other deciding factors for me.

So here are my first impressions. I thought I was going to get a 1/4″ foot that is shown in the instruction manual. I didn’t. If it was supposed to be in the box, I’d love to hear from someone to let me know. I also read in the reviews that some people got a instructional DVD. I didn’t get this, but if I was supposed to get it, I’d like to get it. The hard cover does not allow you to keep the machine plugged in to use it, so it’s not going to be useful for me, except when I want to store it long term. I cover my machine whenever it’s not in use with a quilted cover that I made for my old machine. Luckily, it fits my Brother.

The instruction manual is very helpful. I followed it from front to back so that I could learn everything I could. When I finally got ready to test sew, the tension was really messed up. I worked at it for quite a while, referring back to the manual to adjust it correctly, but it just wouldn’t work! So I threaded the machine again, and took the bobbin out and made sure that I inserted it exactly as the book indicated, and magically, it worked. I think I must have did the bobbin wrong at first. Lesson 1, read the directions! And if all else fails, read them again.

My next problem was very strange. Suddenly the thread was bunching up on the bottom side of my project. Out came the instruction manual again, but the answer wasn’t there. I changed the bobbin thread to a different color, which showed me that the top thread was the thread that was bunching up on the bottom. So I started messing with the tension again. But that wasn’t helping at all! So I decided to try a different thread, and SHAZAM! it worked. The original thread I was using was a cheap thread, I changed it to a good quality thread. Lesson 2, this machine does not like cheap thread.

The quilting table is a fabulous accessory! But I am still working out one problem with it. The backside of the table doesn’t seem to attach to anything on the machine. So as I work on my project, the legs shift and eventually they fold up. The instruction manual does not help in this case at all. I’m still working on this one.

Even with these issues, I am still glad I got this machine. I am able to work faster with more precision. The machine is quiet, compared to my Kenmore. And it is much lighter too! The downside is that it moves around on my table more than I like, especially when I am quilting a larger project. I’m not sure how I will fix this problem, but I will eventually.

So now it’s time for you to decide. Good luck!

4good bargain – nice machine
By J. Hrametz
I wanted a mid-range sewing machine with some flexibility, and this is the machine. I sews quickly and flawlessly, and is super easy to learn. It seems well made, and very intuitive to learn. I love the computerized stitch selection – so easy to change stitch length and width. I’ve had no problems with winding the bobbin as in previous Singer machines. I love the fact that it comes with a quilting table and a case, too, what a deal. It seems to me to be a good, basic machine that would be great for a beginner or intermediate sewer. I’ve made several purses since I bought this machine, and they stitched up very well. Good selection of presser feet with this machine, as well. Easy to thread and easy to wind the bobbin. The bobbins are readily available everywhere, so I bought a dozen for $2 so that I could keep plenty wound and ready to go. This machine is very light and easy to carry around – that’s a big plus for someone like me who has to sew at the kitchen table. I could have rated the machine 5 stars, but haven’t had it long enough to really have super deep feelings about it, so far I’d just say it seems to be a good mid-range machine and I would recommend it. My other machines have been an expensive Singer (nothing but trouble), a budget Brother, and a Baby Lock Serger.

5A Simple Basic Sewing Machine that meets our needs
By Ferb
My wife needed a simple basic sewing machine to repair and make adjustments to our clothes. We decided on this model based on the low price and the Singer name. As we understand there are more Singer machines in service than all other brands together.

We found the DVD that came with the machine very helpful and between that and the owner’s manual the setup was easy. Since then she is using it from time to time and, as it fulfills all our needs at an affordable price, we must give it a high rating.

We would have hated to pay more for a sewing machine with more features that we were not going to use. This is a good reliable machine that fulfills our need for simplicity and ease of operation.

5Use the tension adjusters!
By goodstuff
This is my first sewing machine, the first time I’ve used one. I love it, and hate to see it’s rating so low due to reports of bobbin jamming. None of the 3 complaints mentioned that they even attempted to adjust the upper or lower tension adjustments. My machine jammed up the first time I used it but I read the instructions and adjusted the tensions- problem solved. Adjusting the lower bobbin tension is a touchy feely operation, but not hard to do. From the instructions- “To test the bobbin thread tension, remove the bobbin case and bobbin and hold it by suspending it by the thread. Jerk it once or twice. If the tension is correct, the thread will unwind by about an inch or two. If the tension is too tight, it does not unwind at all. If the tension is too loose, it will drop too much. To adjust, turn the small screw on the side of the bobbin case.” There is a screwdriver included to make this adjustment. It clamps the thread, so a thicker or thinner thread could mean an adjustment is necessary. Mine needed to be loosened for the first spool of thread I used. This bobbin case is polished stainless steel, so it’s not wearing out soon. I guess the screw might get loose someday, my local Jo-Ann fabric store sells new complete bobbin cases for $2.99. The upper thread tension dial requires a lot of adjustment depending on the work. A sewing machine isn’t a hair dryer. They are complex weird monsters and there is a learning curve, no way around it. You’ve got to tune em like a guitar. This machine is heavy and stable and has a pleasant look and feel. It disturbs me there is no inclusion of oil or lubrication instructons. I doubt it’s never necessary, so I got a tube of Official Singer Oil, a very thick oil with a look and smell like melted butter. I recomend it. I’ve only had my 2250 for a week. 5 stars so far.

4Professionally used everyday for 2 years… never any issues whatsoever :)
By Brooke Helfen
Like most of you here I bought this machine at Target when it was on sale. I run my own clothing and accessories line and use my machine about 5 days a week for hours on end. So when my old singer from the 70s finally gave out, I wanted to just pick up a “cheap, temporary” machine that would get me through the season I was in. Little did I know that I’d be happy with this machine and continue to use it for the next two years without so much as any issue (and never even had it serviced or anything). I also teach a sewing class and MANY of my students have purchased this particular machine to learn on… again, without any issues (we’re talking a dozen or more total beginners here). I find it VERY odd that this machine should receive so many horrible reviews… almost all of them citing a bobbin issue. If you are used to a machine that has a top-loading bobbin (the bobbin drops down simply into the throat plate) then you will need to understand that this bobbin installs differently. Whereas a top-loading bobbin will be placed into the machine in the shape of a “P” (with the thread going off to the left of the bobbin like the shape of the letter P), this type of bottom-loading bobbin needs to be inserted into the opening in the bobbin case (the metal housing you remove to replace the bobbin) in the shape of a “q”… with the thread going off to the right of the bobbin itself. Also, you must ensure that the small arm of the bobbin case points to the sky and almost “clicks” into place (into the groove that it’s meant for) when you insert it. And that the bobbin thread comes completely through the tension area in the bobbin case and snaps “into” the hole in the side of the case, pulling almost freely with just a smidge of tension on the thread as it’s being pulled. Just wanted to give a few pointers in case anyone is having a hard time with this.

However, I only give this machine 4 stars because it does NOT come with a zipper foot. Never in my life have I ever heard of such a thing. It comes with all kind of necessary accessories but NO zipper foot. If you plan to install any zippers be sure to pick up a standard Singer zipper foot at a sewing store to accommodate you.

5Gald I bought this case
By Ann McCann
After reading reviews for other cases, referencing issues with flimsiness or such a big size the machine would bang around, I went with this case. And I’m very happy I did.

My new Brother CS6000, with the attachments, fits nicely into the case: set the machine in, poke the foot pedal and cords in, put the top on, snap it into place. The plastic and latches seem sturdy, and the whole package is not too heavy to carry around.

4great for the price
By A. Leghart
Got this for our Singer. (Yes, I can sew well enough to avoid drawing blood.)

The case is much larger…understandable, since its “universal” size will fit many small machines.

It clunks around if you swing or tip the case. We expected that. Not like the old cases that were custom fit to the machine. It’s WAY better than the old cardboard box shedding styrofoam everywhere.

There is no separate compartment for the pedal and cords. They get stuffed in the empty space, then close the latches.

I’ve got a glue gun and some leftover foam padding from some electronic equipment. I think I’ll cut out bumpers/spacers to keep the machine in place. Maybe some flames on the side.

3Good for beginners
By havalina
I have quilted for years on an old 90′s Singer and decided to finally move into the 21st Century. Of course the reason I never upgraded was cause I was broke so I thought I would try out the Singer 7469Q – I got it at Jo-Ann’s which has a 10 day return!

I used this machine to quilt a queen sized wedding chain quilt. I plan on returning it. I have been wanting to upgrade from my early 90′s Singer and wanted to check out this one. It feels cheap – for ex. the thread holder is thin flimsy plastic. The LED light is incredibly dim – you need a desk lamp. Also, the stiches don’t get very long — my old Singer you could get long basting stitches which is nice.

It’s fussy about the thread – you have to have it threaded just right or it goes nuts – I never had this problem before either.

It does pretty well with free motion quilting — a little jerky but after an hour or so I had gotten used to it and could do some attractive stitching.

Over all, I think this is a GREAT machine for a beginners – it has all the extras so you can experiment with what feet you like to use, etc. and learn about it. BUT the feet are flimsy. It’s not a work horse like my old machine.

I would say, if you make more than 2 quilts a year, upgrade. If you just want to make a few baby quilts, this is a great economical option for you, it would probably last great under light use — I use mine so much I”m worried about breaking it and am going to suck it up and pay a bunch of money for a nicer machine.

5Singer confidence quilter
By Carol Baum
I have had this machine for a year. Most of the sewing I have done on this machine is quilt piecing, general sewing, and some quilting. One feature that no one has mentioned (as far as I recall) is a special feature that in piecing quilts has saved me much time in piecing. As you begin your seam the machine sews a few stitches and backs up over them, securing the beginning of the seam. When you finish the seam, hit the reverse arrow and it secures the last stitches of the seam in the same way.

The stitches are consistently straight. It also comes with an attachable walking foot. The throat plate of the machine is clear making it visible to see if you are running out of thread.

There are better sewing machines of this type but the price ranges begin somewhere at $1,000. With all the “bells and whistles” this machine has, I would highly recommend it.

4Everything you need, and easy to boot.
By Erica Paris
I had never sewn anything before in my life, but I wanted to learn. This sewing machine came with a DVD to explain how to thread it. It was very easy to thread, wind the bobbin, and put the bobbin in. I do wish they had given me a bit more info on what each foot is for and what each one looks like. I guess they assumed that I’m less clueless than I actually am about sewing.

I’ve got absolutely no complaints about the quality of the machine. When I first brought it home, I was playing with it, and got a huge rat’s nest of thread stuck behind the dog feeder. The machine came with a small flat piece of metal, that (with absolutely no instruction from anyone) I was able to figure out was to be used to unscrew the face plate, and get everything cleaned out. I was able to fix it and get back to sewing within about 10 minutes.

It comes with two trays (sorry, I don’t know what they’re called). One is a larger tray that’s good for holding large projects like a quilt. The other tray is small and compact, but it’s my favorite as it has a small compartment that is perfect for holding the extra feet, needles, etc.

Complaints: The “automatic threader” is a joke. I have tried to use it to thread the machine about 50 times, and can not figure it out, despite watching the DVD instructions on how to do it. The light is not very bright, so expect to have a lamp over your sewing area. The bobbin window pops out completely, and is very easy to misplace (which I do every time I have to change the bobbin.) I wish there was better instructions on how to use the feet.

Also, not really a complaint, but a side note… I don’t use the larger tray much, so it takes up a lot of storage space in my limited sewing area, which is something you might want to think about if you have a very small work area too.

Compliments: This machine is so super easy to thread, and sew. It has all the feet you need to do all your projects (if you know how to use them). I love the compartment in the smaller tray, to hold all the small stuff. It has 4 or 5 very pretty stitch patterns that look really nice on a quilt. The machine and light never get hot to the touch, no matter how long I use it. And if you do manage to screw it up (luckily this doesn’t happen often) it’s super easy to fix. Its default setting has the needle always stop in the up position, so you don’t have to manually lift the needle every time you switch squares on a quilt.

All-in-all, a wonderful machine, but perhaps better for someone who knows what they’re doing, or is able to take a sewing class or two. Even if (like me) you’ve never sewn anything at all, if you just want to use the default settings, it’s delightfully easy. 4.5 stars. =)

4Easy to use (except zipper foot). I like it!
By Julia Amiya Messersmith
I just bought this sewing machine about three weeks ago. I got it as a replacement for a Bernette that I used for about thirty minutes total that the repair man could not figure out how to fix. I am working on my fashion certificate and needed one right away. I picked this one partially because it was PINK!

This machine is easy to use – bobbin winding, changing stitches, portability, two-needle. I like a mechanical machine. I have not tried the buttonholer yet. A great first machine! This is my fourth. I like the reverse, the freearm, the size.

Petty annoyance – the presser foot is low when up, so when you need to know where your needle is going into the fabric, you have to knock the foot up with your finger so you can see – not a big deal. BIG deal – put the zipper foot on and then you have to adjust the needle width out of the zipper foot groove to get the seam close enough to the zipper, because the foot is wide(???) at the back and on the same level(???) as the foot itself. Maybe I’ll just use invisible zippers.

If you are rough with things, do not buy this machine. Many of the parts are plastic, like the presser foot lever. We use that a lot.

I have sewn with many layers of denim, very light fabrics, and much in between with great success. Just change the needle after each project.

I hope I have given you enough information to begin to make an informed decision.

4great machine, perfect for beginners
By Dayna Winchester
I just got this machine about a week ago, and am asolutely thrilled with it!
I needed to sew some trimmings on a coat for my Halloween costume. The jacket is a vintage London Fog coat made of a heavy canvas material. This machine had NO problem sewing through the thick layers.
What impressed me the most is i’d previously been using my mother in law’s $800 sewing machine, and after constant adjustment and realignment I still broke 3 needles and had a problem with my backstitching. This machine handled the problem beautifully, and it’s only a fraction of the price!

A few things I might note:

The pink is a a little darker than that in the picture. This did not bother me since it’s still pink, which is what attracted me in the first place.

I gave it four out of five stars (wish I could give it 4 1/2!) because the machine is so lightweight, a couple of times it wanted to move around while I was readjusting my fabric. This wasn’t an issue with the actual sewing and after using it a couple times I figured out how to handle it so it stayed put. I don’t think this would be a problem with lighter weight materials.

I noticed other reviewers said they couldn’t get the backstitch to go in a straight line. The only time I had this problem was when I was sewing through several thick layers. It was partially my fault because I had the pedal pushed down too far and it kind of jump started the machine and took off. Every other time was no problem, so maybe it’s something they’re doing?

The instructions were VERY clear. I have very little patience when it comes to instructions and these were a breeze! It’s also very helpful that bobbin and needle threading diagrams are etched into the machine itself, for quick reference. I got a bobbin threaded in no time, no hassle.

The speed is perfect for me, it’s not too fast but not too slow, I imagine an expert sewer might want something a little faster. For me, it made it that much easier to control my stitching.

I actually got the machine for half price using my Amazon reward points, from my Amazon credit card. I got free shipping and saved $15 more by choosing super saver shipping, and the item arrived after a really reasonable amount of time. I think it’s worth waiting an extra two days to save money on shipping!

All in all I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is inexperienced at sewing, like myself, or for light duty jobs like stitching hems, etc.
I think this would make a perfect gift for a teen/young adult, because it’s smaller, lightweight, easily portable, and the pink makes it so charming!
I just started sewing again after taking a sewing class in middle school, and this machine has got me really excited to take it up again.

5Great Buy!
By T. S. Reichert
I love my new sewing machine! My husband, who had never sewn with a machine before, set it up quickly and we both can use it easily. It’s so easy to use I am planning several more sewing projects for this summer. On my last project, the machine had no problems sewing through denim seams and pockets. I am very pleased with all of the features (59 different stitches, a double needle for gathering, needle threader, button foot) I got with this relatively inexpensive sewing machine. Everything is working great so far. I would recommend this machine for anyone looking for the basics plus the capability for more advanced sewing down the road.

5Loved it from the first try!
By Sarah S.
Before buying this machine I used an older model of Brother Brand. When the Brother broke down I still wanted something reasonably basic but with a few more capabilities than the Brother had been able to do. I was in no way disappointed in the way this machine stitches and runs. The DVD that comes with it is very well done and gave lot’s of good information and ideas. The only things about this machine that might take some getting used to is that the power cord and foot control are seperate whereas on my Brother machine they were all connected in one cord and the foot control is less sensitive than the Brother had ben and has some delays if I take my foot off it and then try to make it go again immediately. Those are not bad things but just something that I will have to get used to. Overall it is a very easy machine to use and it truly stitches beautifully and much better than my older machine.

4Lots of stitches, features for a small price
By Joanna Daneman
I was VERY surprised that a sewing machine could be budget-priced, yet have the features and stitch repertoire of a much more expensive machine. I have to say, if you are looking for a do-all machine and don’t have megabucks to spend, this could be a very excellent choice.

Features:

Electronic controls
Seventy stitches
Six one-step buttonholes (automatic foot fits buttonhole to button.)
Top loading bobbin (I prefer this, easier for me to see)
Push button stitch choice (rather than knob)
Stretch stitches, ornamental stitches, utility stitches
Automatic pressure adjuster on pressure foot (for thin to thick fabrics)
Extra high foot lift (handy for quilting or doing thick layers of denin hemming, for example.)

Most of the time, if you want to buy a beginner-level sewing machine, you will not get automatic buttonholes nor electronic stitch choice. There are a LOT of stitches here, including quite a few ornamental embroidery-types stitches that are handy for children’s clothing, bedding, housewares and quilting. This machine can handle twin needles (great for hemming and top stitching.) My only complaint is that it only comes with a minimal number of accessory feet, so you might have to spend extra to get a specialty foot you wish to have (such as a walking foot for quilting.)

A tight, quick but never shallow little book that shows how the private eye story should be written. This is the first offering from this fellow, and I hope he has a lot more like it in him. Merck Bayern is a likeable guy with just enough flaws to make him a real person, one you’d like to shake up and down once in a while.

3The Sewing Machine Murder
By Julia S. Saurbaugh
I’ve heard other people say that they will read a book if the first line on the first page is catchy. With this book, it was the first line of the fifth paragraph on the first page, that I thought catchy. But no matter which line was catchy, this is a very delightful book, fast to read and full of colorful characters. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a light, fun, entertaining story.

4HOW TO STOP LOWER THREAD LOOPING
By SBP
I too was having a ton of problems with the lower thread looping under the fabric. It was very frustrating. Finally I figured out how to fix it. Refer to the owner’s manual section on inserting the bobbin for photos. What you want to do is drop in the bobbin, and pull the thread through the little slit like it says. But, you have to make sure that the thread goes into the slot in the “tension-adjusting spring” (this is hard to see; pull up the plastic tongue that forms the slit a little with your fingernail to see where it is), although it should go in by itself, then YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE BOBBIN SO IT DOESN’T MOVE AND PULL THE THREAD GENTLY TO SEAT IT INTO THE SPRING. That is the key. After I made sure the thread was all the way in, like magic my lower thread was working perfectly.

Aside from that I am happy with the machine. I especially like the needle threader and think that the top thread is very easy to thread. Now that I figured out the lower thread issue, I want to experiment with all the stitches! I wish the presser foot lever was on the back instead of the inside, but oh well. Be careful taking off the tape because I ripped some off and it pulled up a little plastic on the green part of the machine.

The owner’s manual IS hard to read. The Spanish is right after the English, and sometimes they repeat the same instructions twice, and it’s not laid out well. It is manageable, though.

They make you think you have to buy special bobbins, but on the box it says you can replace them with class 15, although I have not tried that yet. The accessories seem quite acceptable, except I wish they had given you some ball point needles for knits and stretch rather than just more sharp points.

Overall, it sews fine once you get everything threaded right, and I’ve made several tops already. Definitely good for a beginner or someone who doesn’t want to do anything too fancy.

4One major limitation
By Cassiopea
This is a great machine for the price. I am teaching my teenage daughter to sew and she is turned off by my clunky old Singer. So I keep that around for the tough jobs and use this new Brother for the light weight stuff.

The only major limitation of this machine is that it can’t really handle heavy weight fabrics or multiple layers very well. There is no presser foot adjustment, so the foot can only be raised so much, and can’t be adjusted for variable feed, depending on fabric thickness. There is only one setting. That means you need to use plenty of pins, and keep the old Singer around for the heavy duty stuff. Otherwise, a fun little machine.

3Jury’s still out, but not everything I’d hoped for.
By NYer
I’m an intermediate beginner. I have some experience with industrial machines from a sewing class but haven’t made any completely successful garments yet. A more experienced sewer suggested I buy a cheap Brother machine. I bought this machine in June largely because of the positive reviews it received on Amazon. Here are the pros and cons I’ve encountered to date:

PROS

–Price

–Bobbin winding and threading are straightforward (especially the threading function)

–Makes a nice stitch so far

CONS

–The manual is difficult to understand in parts and the layout and index are poor. It also confusingly includes a Spanish-language version immediately after the English text instead of following the English version at the end, as is usually the case with dual- or multi-language manuals. (Some users over at the Wal-mart site had the same problem.)

–The markings on the soleplate don’t run the entire length because the feed dogs and bobbin case (on top of the machine) get in the way. The start of the gauge is fairly far behind the presser foot.

–The thread spindle can only handle small spools. To accommodate larger spools I’ve had to tape chopsticks to the spindle. I also bought a standalone thread hook to create height and tension, but haven’t used it yet.

–The needle threader gets in the way. It’s not that hard to thread a needle, and this is unnecessary.

–Has a somewhat toy-like feel. But for $114, that’s not surprising.

–Some of the optional feet are not snap on.

–Many desirable presser feet will not fit this model. I think, but am not sure, that this machine is classified as a “5mm presser foot model.” The “7mm” accessories don’t fit. I went into a store after having researched another foot online. The place talked me into a $40 foot that does not fit and then would not take it back. Make sure any feet you buy will fit on this model, or at least buy from a reputable source like Amazon.

–It has a lot of stitches that I don’t really have much use for. All I really want are a reliable and well-formed straight and zigzag stitch.

–The numerous dials are confusing and I can’t but wonder if so many functions won’t make the machine more likely to break down.

–An invisible zipper foot is not included. That would have been much more useful than the accessory feet provided, which I believe are (they aren’t labeled, which they should be), a 1/4 quilting foot, a narrow hemmer foot, a quilting foot and a blind stitch foot.

–It doesn’t come with a carrying case.

Frankly, I’m beginning to wonder if I wouldn’t have been better off applying the $100 I spent on this machine towards an entry-level Bernina or an industrial Juki. More often than not you get what you pay for and sometimes cheap tools are more costly in the end.

Perhaps I will edit this review after a few more months of experience with this machine.

UPDATE, October 2011: I used this machine a lot this summer. My impression remains the same. It’s OK, but even for a first machine, I would invest a bit more money for a little more machine.

5Excellent Machine.
By J. Escalante
I am new to sewing and I am IN LOVE with this machine. My first projects were blankets and with this machine I got it done in a snap. I cant wait til I get a bit better at sewing so I can use the Flower stitch on this machine. I would highly reccommend this machine to anyone.

5I like it!
By Goldilocks
I have had this machine for about a month. I have made a quilt, 4 shirts, and 3 sets of curtains with it. I am a sewing novice. I spent some time on my mother’s machine as a kid, it was unfortunate as it broke a lot, and now I’m really learning how to do it through quilting and sewing classes.

Pros:
Auto tension! I love it. It works every time.
Drop in bobbin! I will never go back.
Easy to select stitches. (however,do read the manual before doing
twin needle work!)
Lots of choices for embellishing items with embroidery.
So far, no issues and I’ve sewn heavy and light fabrics.

Cons:
The autothreader takes more work than doing it myself.
You will need another light source if you like to sew at night.

I don’t like that to reverse stitch I have to hold the button at
the same time I guide my fabric. Couldn’t they just let me press
the button, then press the button again when I’m done with
reverse? (That’s not novice friendly!)

A bit heavy to carry. I’m tough, but carrying it for more than a
short walk will get to you. Get a rollerboard carrier and skip
the plastic case.

5Very Satisfied Consumer!
By M. Bellavan
At 37 years old, I have only been sewing for less then 2 months! I originally bought the Singer Simple model. It was a great tool in teaching me basic threading and sewing technique; but I quickly outgrew it! The “simple” became not so simple when it came to bobbin thread and performance. It was a nightmare to continually have to re-thread the bobbin. That, along with various other factors, led to the search for an upgraded sewing machine. At first I was intimidated by the “electronic” features of the newer models, although now I am not sure why that is so. I LOVE THIS MACHINE! I have yet to really play around with it, but the basics of just threading and straight stitching have proven to be far superior to the “simple” model when it comes to ease of use and performance.

1. The “Confidence” does not jump up and down on the table, like the “simple”.

2. The bobbin has given me ZERO problems when it comes to threading and clean sewing. No more messed up or broken bobbin thread!

3. The Auto tension has performed perfectly so far.

4. The “Confidence” is less noisy than the “simple”.

5. Overall, the “Confidence” flows smoothly. The electronic features take some time to get used to; but having so many stitches to choose from makes sewing all the more fun.

As previously noted, I am a complete novice. But to be able to quickly thread and start sewing, and come out with a quality garment is a tribute to the user friendly design of the “Confidence”. The instruction manual is sufficient in its definitions, descriptions, and photos … enough to make sense. The included accessories with the “Confidence” are valuable.

With so many sewing machines on the market, it becomes overwhelming to know which machine to choose. I based my decision largely on consumer reviews (as well as a recommendation from several staff members at a retail store). As of now, I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

NOTES:

As another reviewer notes, the machine is a bit heavy to carry around. As for the backstitch button, I have not found it to be a great problem that the backstitch button must continually be pressed. The “simple’s” backstitch button was a MAJOR pain, and never really worked right. The “confidence” backstitch button is fairly pain free to use.

Also, it is noted that Class 15J bobbins must be used. I have used Class 15 with no problems; but have since decided (per further recommendation) to only use Class 15J bobbins. Can’t find these everywhere. I found them at several online retailers, as well as Ebay and Singerco.

I really believe the average sewer will be very pleased with the Singer Confidence 7470. The price is not as high as quality machines, and the features are amazing.

Have fun sewing!

5Great machine for the price!!
By Brandi Roberts
This is my 1st brand new machine. I had always rec’d hand-me-downs before and they were never good machines to begin with. I would rate myself as a decent sewer. I recently got into quilting. This machine you will give you nice stiches, you don’t have to worry about your project falling apart. (If you have ever had that happen you know how devasting it can be). I think this machine would be good for anyone, even if they were new to sewing. The manual is super easy and so is winding the bobbin and threading the machine. I did a lot of research and for the features, this was the best quality for the price.
Good Luck to you and happy sewing!

3Not what I expected
By mcguire
I thought this would be a tapestry bag like my other sewing machine cases. It was a vinyl with the pattern stamped on it. Feel that the seams would tear out if it is used very often. Will probably return.

5GREAT set of sewing machine feet for beginners
By I.M
This set is great, it has the most commonly used feet, such as buttonhole, button foot, narrow hem foot, zipper foot, a low shank adapter, a quilt guide, a seam ripper, blind stitch foot, among others, but after I bought it here on Amazon from this seller, i went to Ebay and saw this same set a little cheaper and with the addition of the cording foot, which is not on this set, but overall this set is a good buy for the price and it is compatible with most snap on style sewing machine feet, and if not it comes with the adaptor, overall recommended!!!

4Great product could use instructions
By Janice Kowalczyk
I was confused by this product at first, as it is not fully clear what each part is and it was not fully clear how to attach the adaptor which was necessary for use of these parts with my Singer 7025 Deluxe Machine. Fortunately I am persistent and figured it out but it took time. The value here is great, the quality is very good but it would be nice if each part was identified and some explanation went with the adaptor…No written material came with this order at all. Now that I have the adaptor on I am ready to get to my sewing project but I am still not sure what some of the other parts can be used for.

4Very Useful but limited Infor
By Ms. Elizabeth H. Watkin
This set came well wrapped though after quite a wait (considering how much is charged for shipping and handling). HOWEVER it is exactly what I was looking for, the adapter is perfect because I have quite an old Singer. I just wish there was some info about all the feet uses and how to use the adapter. I luckily found this site that helped me work out how to use the adapter, [...] Still not sure what all the feet are for and not clear on which one is the zipper foot….. But will work it out I am sure.
